Serving Humanity: A Divine Duty

Posted by Mariya Collins on

In Islam, community service and volunteering hold profound significance. Acts of selflessness reflect the essence of Islamic teachings, promoting compassion, unity, and the well-being of society. Rooted in the Qur'an and Sunnah, the values of generosity and care for others are deeply ingrained in Muslim practices, encouraging believers to serve their communities with sincerity and humility.

Allah Instructs Us to Give Generously and Selflessly

The Qur'an emphasizes the importance of helping others, as reflected in this verse:
"And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [saying], ‘We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.’” (Surah Al-Insan: 8-9)

This verse beautifully highlights the selflessness of giving, solely for the sake of Allah, without expecting anything in return

"You will never achieve righteousness until you spend in the way of Allah from that which you love. And whatever you spend, indeed, Allah is Knowing of it."
(Surah Aal-E-Imran 92)

This verse reminds us that true piety involves giving from what we cherish most, emphasizing sincerity and selflessness in our acts of charity.

"Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is in one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, and the Prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves..." (Surah Al-Baqarah177)

This verse emphasizes that true faith is reflected in practical deeds, especially helping those in need.

In Islam, service to others is seen as a form of worship. By caring for the needs of the less fortunate, a Muslim not only fulfills a moral duty but also strengthens their connection with Allah.

The Prophetic Example

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a living example of service to humanity. He was known for his kindness to neighbors, compassion towards the poor, and assistance to the vulnerable.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The most beloved of people to Allah is the one who brings the most benefit to others." (Al-Mu'jam Al-Awsat)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while his neighbor goes hungry." (Sunan al-Kubra, 19049)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The best of companions in the sight of Allah is the one who is best to his companion. And the best of neighbors in the sight of Allah is the one who is best to his neighbor." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 1944)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The one who strives to help the widows and the poor is like one who fights in the way of Allah." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5353; Sahih Muslim, 2982)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever relieves a believer’s distress of the distressful aspects of this world, Allah will rescue him from a difficulty of the difficulties of the Hereafter. Whoever alleviates [the situation of] one in dire straits who cannot repay his debt, Allah will alleviate his lot in both this world and the Hereafter." (Sahih Muslim, 2699)

Through acts of service, we emulate the Prophet’s example and embody the principles of Islam in our daily lives.

The Social Impact of Volunteering

Volunteering and community service build a sense of solidarity and belonging. By uplifting those in need, we create a ripple effect of positivity that strengthens the fabric of society. From feeding the hungry to supporting shelters, these acts address immediate needs while fostering long-term resilience.

Islamic history is rich with examples of collective care, such as the establishment of waqf (endowments) to fund education, healthcare, and public welfare. These initiatives demonstrate the enduring legacy of community service as an integral part of Islamic culture.

Spiritual Rewards of Giving Back

Islamic teachings highlight the spiritual benefits of serving others. Allah promises immense rewards for those who strive to make a difference:
"Whoever relieves a believer’s distress of the distressful aspects of this world, Allah will rescue him from a difficulty of the difficulties of the Hereafter." (Sahih Muslim)

This assurance motivates Muslims to prioritize acts of kindness, knowing that their efforts will not only improve lives in this world but also earn eternal blessings.

How to Serve Your Community

  1. Volunteer Locally: Join efforts at food banks, shelters, or local organizations like Nisa Homes or Islamic centers.
  2. Donate Generously: Support trusted charities like Islamic Relief Canada, OBAT Canada and ICNA Relief that provide aid to those in need.
  3. Offer Your Skills: Use your expertise, whether in education, healthcare, or business, to empower others.
  4. Engage in Environmental Stewardship: Plant trees, clean public spaces, or advocate for sustainable practices.

The Role of Businesses in Community Service

As businesses grow, they can become powerful agents of positive change. For instance, at RASM, we’ve embraced our responsibility to serve by supporting local women’s shelters and partnering with charities like ICNA Relief. These efforts align with the Islamic principles of ihsan (excellence) and create a lasting impact in our community.

Conclusion

In Islam, volunteering and community service are more than noble acts—they are essential expressions of faith. By serving others, we fulfill our duty to Allah, strengthen our communities, and inspire hope in a world that needs it more than ever.

Let us strive to make a difference, one act of kindness at a time, remembering the words of the Prophet (peace be upon him):
"Charity does not decrease wealth." (Sahih Muslim)

May our efforts be accepted, and may they bring us closer to Allah and to each other. Ameen.
